  • Seas to Air to Roads

    Posted on by adam

I have had the privilege in the past of maneuvering a boat. A small boat, but a boat nevertheless. Similarly driving and therefore driving lessons have made it possible for millions and millions of people including me to transport our own stuff from A – B.

There is pretty unlikely to be a realistic replacement to using shipping in the foreseeable future due to the sheer bulk that can be transported. Likewise air transport will always have its place due to the speed possible. Then of course cars and lorries are unlikely to be replaced for obvious reasons.

Therefore it will be unlikely to mean an end to ‘pirating’ in the foreseeable future. Such massive cargoes (such as oil) can hardly be put on a plane, but hold such high value.

  • How did pirates get popular?

    Posted on by adam

Funny question really. Authentic Pirates stand in direct contradiction to what most of the world authentically finds acceptable in terms of  morality and legality (theft). So how has the idea of pirates become so popular?

I guess it is the same with many not-so-civilised characters of history. From cowboys and Indians, soldiers, etc. children find them all exciting without any real concept of the suffering endured and caused by and to the peoples and individuals in question. Is this a problem? Well yes and no. Does it do any immediate harm? Probably not in terms of  whether a child is likely to spear someone with a bow and arrow or a plastic pirate sword. There is a question however about whether it is beneficial to bring up children in a fantasy world which is in direct conflict with reality. Something that debate will never get to the bottom of.

  • Yet another Pirates of the Caribbean?

    Posted on by adam

So, yet another Pirates of the Caribbean has been released in UK cinemas. Seldom does a film have much success into its second sequel, but they have gone on to see reasonable success with their third sequel (fourth film).

So what is keeping it going? Why do people keep going to see it?

I suspect that one of it’s main strengths is it’s cult following and the fact that they seem to cut very few corners when it comes to making them. Often the budget goes down after the first, causing the quality to go down too. Although I know nothing about the money that has been spent on this film/these films, the quality does not seem to have dropped.

I do however recognise a few less of the ‘usual suspects’ from the official trailer – but that might be a purely plot issue (can’t remember how the last one finished!).

Personally, the reason I will almost certainly be taking the trip to see it is simply the character of Captain Jack Sparrow. Funny, funny guy. Johnny Depp has won me over with this film. Looking forward to seeing it (him!).

  • Reality or ‘Cartoony’!

Bon. Curly ipkis man nery van elma. Era convari, era coli mel vandaro.

Often viewed with nostalgia, make no mistake – Pirates are not all nice and ‘cartoony’. Pirates are not really the kind of people you want to come across if you have got something that they haven’t. Historically they are reasonably inclined to just take it… not very nicely.
